No Junk Food

"I did a 30-day no junk food challenge and it’s not as easy as I thought. There were cheat days and struggles along the way. Some words from a dietician, former vegetarian, and someone who lives with a deadly milk allergy were given. This opened my mind to how people actually live day by day. In the end, I’m glad I did it.

First off, there’s the question, What is junk food? According to Western Australia’s department of health, junk food is 'food and drinks low in nutrients (e.g. vitamins, minerals and fibre) and high in kilojoules, saturated fat, added sugar and/or added salt.' 

When I interviewed a local dietician, Sherri Hall, a keyword in her description was energy dense. She used a twinkie as an example to explain. The twinkie is high in calories (energy) but doesn’t have a lot of vitamins and minerals. This is compared to something that is “Nutrient dense” like blackberries. They have plenty of vitamins and minerals but not as many calories as a twinkie.


With these definitions in mind I began my challenge. Some foods were easier to avoid than others, soda wasn’t that difficult but cookies and microwave meals definitely where. Yes, there were cheat days because of events and consistent migraines. I didn’t shame myself for a cheat day, I just made sure that I focused more on healthy options. So, obviously it wasn’t thirty days all together.

In order to avoid reaching for a soda or a bag of chips, I came up with alternatives. Instead of soda I started drinking natural fruit flavored sparkling waters. My exchange for chips were Lime rice puffs. Not only were these healthy options but they taste great! Honestly, I’d prefer these sparkling waters over soda."


Monday 9-17-18, DAY 1
​Today was pretty easy. Toast for breakfast, a wrap for lunch. I drank my water for the day and every thing was going great! Even dinner was easy, I had a salad. My only problem was that I REALLY wanted some ice cream. After internally screaming I got over it. Day one successful!


Tuesday 9-18-18
​The struggle is starting. The morning was completely fine. I survived without my goldfish, hooray! But then lunch came and a huge craving for pizza hit me. Sadly, as I walked up to it I realized eating it wasn’t an option. So, I made my way over to the saled. After that my day was normal. That is, until I got home. Looking around for a snack I see strawberries. Automatically I think  ‘strawberries and chocolate frosting’. Again it hit me, “that’s not an option”.


Wednesday 9-19-18
​Day 3! Things were pretty good. For breakfast I had cinnamon bread with whipped honey (yum). I avoided eating any junk food that was offered. Even though it’s pretty early in the challenge I’ve noticed I’m not so tired as usual. I’ve been sleeping better and it’s easier to get up i the morning. Only problem was that I had to do the 20 minute run and I forgot to fill my water bottles this morning.



Thursday 9-20-18
​Today wasn’t the best. I didn’t eat breakfast so I was starving till lunch. Not to mention going through weight training on an empty stomach WAS NOT EASY. The plus side of my day was I noticed my skin has gotten clearer. Only to have the worst thing happen. My mom and sister picked me up after school. They had save me from fries from Dairy Queen. I ate a few and then screamed. Realizing I had just broken my streak of no junk food. Cravings really take over your brain.


Friday 9-21-18
​Friday… the day I can usually go home from school and eat a bowl of ice cream. NOT TODAY. instead , while on my way to my dad’s my brother was eating Bugles, my mom was eating caramelized peanuts, and my baby brother was drinking a soda! All while I’m suffering. My only highlight was eating a bag of carrots.


Saturday 9-22-18
​I had my best friend over today. Usually when we’re together we binge Youtube while raiding the cabinets of chips and candy. Instead we ate strawberries. Now, I like strawberries, but knowing it was my only option made me die a little on the inside.


Sunday 9-23-18
​A usual Sunday, slept in, spent most of the day in my pajamas, it was great! There were zero problems. All until I get dropped off with my mom who had just gotten Little Caesar’s Pizza. I instantly wanted a slice of pineapple pizza (yes, I like pineapple pizza).



Monday 9-24-18
​I’ve officially been doing this challenge for a week. Honestly, today wasn’t the best. It was full of stress. So, not being able to indulge in sugary sweets as usual pained me. So, I ate carrots. Seriously, of all things why are carrots my option.



Tuesday  9-25-18
​The only way to describe this day is UGH and AWE. Everything was going fantastic until I get to second period and I got a migraine. When I get a migraine it takes over my entire day. I’m nauseous, in pain, can’t see or think straight, it’s horrible. Obviously, I went home early. Definitely not a good thing to have happen. Though, later I felt better. My day was all made better when my boyfriend showed up and asked me to homecoming.



Wednesday 9-26-18
​First off, I missed school since yesterday I got so nauseous I spilled my guts. (TMI I know) Most of the day I slept. Though, I had no choice but to cheat on my challenge. I ate a microwave burrito (I know, shame)



Thursday 9-27-18
​I came to school feeling pretty hungry. All I ate was a granola bar. Not to mention I’m super tired from dealing with that migraine. Also, my skin isn’t as clear as it was before. Over all, not happy with my day.



Friday 9-28-18
​Today I had a doctor’s appointment. I’m 121.2 lbs, I’ve GAINED weight, 3.2 lbs to be exact. I just have one question, HOW? If I’m not eating junk food I should be losing weight! Not that it matters.



Saturday 9-29-18
​CHEAT DAY! I went to my best friend’s homecoming so of course I had to. Not a lot though, A soda, with a few slices of pizza, and a brownie. That cherry Coca Cola was well worth it.



Sunday 9-30-18
​I honestly don’t think my skin appreciated that pizza. There’s a few blemishes scattered  across my face. Pizza is definitely NOT a good idea. Oh well, back to no junk food. Hopefully my skin clears up before homecoming.



Monday 10-1-18
​I’M SO TIRED. Last night I couldn’t sleep and I was super hungry. This Morning I had a bagel half way through second period I was starving. So, when it finally came to lunch I was happy. My only problem is I wanted some french fries but couldn’t have any. That will definitely be on my list of things to eat at the end of this challenge. Anyways, my skin isn’t getting any better and the benefits that I had before are fading.


Tuesday 10-2-18
​I got another migraine today and had to go home early. I’m not happy, now I have a bunch of stuff to catch up on in my classes. Whatever the cause of my migraines are I hope it’s solved. There wasn’t much that I ate today besides soup since it was easier to make than a full meal.



Wednesday 10-3-18
​I went to school today and there was a lot that I missed. I HAD A QUIZ TODAY. My migraines have been such a problem the past two weeks that half the stuff on the quiz I didn’t even know! So, I’m pretty stressed right now. On the plus side, I bought a coffee today to help with my migraine so I felt better.



Thursday 10-4-18
​Thursday!!! The week is almost over!  Since it was throwback thursday I spent most of my morning getting ready so I didn’t really eat anything. So, for the first half of the day I was pretty hungry. My skin hasn’t cleared up very much so I’m a little worried about Saturday. I’m also very tired, the only plus side is I’ve been falling asleep easier.



Friday 10-5-18
​Today was a very busy day. There was the homecoming assembly, I had two assignments due, the homecoming football game, and I had a friend over. With all this going on it was really hard to stay on track with my challenge, but I did it. I had a granola bar this morning and then a parfait for lunch, I didn’t eat a lot. My skin has cleared up a good amount so there’s not much to worry about for homecoming tomorrow. Overall a good day.



Saturday 10-6-18
​Homecoming is today! I headed over to my boyfriend’s house around 10am for his little brother’s birthday party. It was a breakfast get together so I had pancakes, yum. Later in the day there was cake and ice cream. Since it was for a birthday and homecoming was that night I thought there wasn’t any harm in a little sugar. In other words, it was a cheat day. At the end of the day I was super tired, but I had fun and I wouldn’t change a thing.



Sunday 10-7-18
​Last night was so exhausting that I slept in till noon. Then after I woke up I had to get ready and go to work. For breakfast I had a bagel with cream cheese and turkey.  But, I was overwhelmed with fatigue so my day was pretty hard. When I got home I was so hungry that I started inhaling grapes. It was the most difficult day of my week.



Monday 10-8-18
​Surprisingly, today I woke up at 10 in the morning. Then I had to do chores and watch my siblings. Later I went to the C-team football game around five. That occupied me for awhile and I got home at about seven so I could do chores and get ready for bed. It was a pretty calm day.



Tuesday 10-9-18
​I got ANOTHER migraine. For the past three Tuesdays now I’ve been getting migraines. Of course, I went home and had to sleep it off. My mom scheduled a doctor’s appointment so we can try to resolve this issue. The only good thing is that I didn’t have to call a cheat day because of my migraine so I’m  pretty happy.



Wednesday 10-10-18
My doctor’s appointment was today. We still don’t know why I keep getting migraines but we do know that the Tuesday workout in weight training is triggering them. I was written a note so I can hopefully have an alternative workout. I still missed a lot of work yesterday though.



Thursday 10-11-18
​There is so much I need to catch up on! I have homework in math and English to do that’s due tomorrow! It’s really hard to get all of this done when I can’t have any sugar to keep me going. My sister and I have even made a list of all the thing I’m going to eat when this challenge is over. Not to mention my mom bought me poptarts, which are SUPER tempting. Luckily I’ve managed to keep myself from consuming them.



Friday 10-12-18
​Throughout the day I’ve been completely exhausted. Also hungry, extremely hungry.  At school there isn’t a large variety of lunch options that follow the rules of my challenge. So, I got a chicken burger and gave my fries to my friend. I was still hungry though, but I just went on with my day.



Saturday 10-13-18
​Today I got up at 8:30 am, ate an apple, and drank some juice. My boyfriend came over so we hung out for the day. I didn’t eat lunch but I snacked on pineapple and lime rice puffs. In the middle of the day I decided to check my weight, I’m 117.6 lbs. ! So my weight has changed by 3.6 lbs. Which is different from my usual varying weight. It was a really good day over all. At the end I was so tired though that I fell asleep at 10:30 pm.



Sunday  10-14-18
​I was so tired last night that I slept till 12:30! A full fourteen hours and I felt great. Throughout the rest of my day I had a bunch of energy. There wasn’t much I had to do except clean up my room, eat something, and take a shower. Then I went back to my mom’s around seven.



Monday 10-15-18
​I was so hungry today! Even though I ate a pear for breakfast, by the time first period ended I was starving. Luckily, I made it through the first half of the day and for lunch I had a chicken burger. My skin has surprisingly gotten clearer. The only sad part is last night I didn’t sleep very well. I had a bad dream that kept me half awake for most of the night.



Tuesday 10-16-18
​Today was the last day of my challenge! It was a pretty good day and I didn’t get a migraine! Although I was pretty hungry throughout the day, just like yesterday. I had a bagel for breakfast and a burrito for lunch.  Even though some people would think that I would want to continue
